In chronological order - Happy Birthday to:
wyldemama,

Several months ago, Scarlet Danger and I started to work on opening a roller rink in Boise (since there is not a single one in the area anymore - just the jalopy in Nampa). Based on the down payment that would be required for the Small Business loan amount we'd need for start up costs, there was no way we would be able to come up with that amount in the next three decades. Since they're not giving grants to single women nor single mothers anymore (apparently), we pretty much are stuck unless we find some sugar daddy investor. So sad.
I would also loooove to have a catering company (although I am not fond of the hours required) or some sort of pet daycare/self-grooming station....yet again, it's all about the lack of the Benjamens. :(
They're still a favorite of mine, but Fleetwood Mac was probably my first "favorite" band. I remember listening to them on the way to summer camp and school and thinking how grown-up, dark and serious their lyrics were. Add in the mystique of Stevie Nicks, a brooding Lindsay Buckingham and plenty of intra-band drama, my attention was piqued for sure. I'm still sad to say that I have yet to see them perform live - either I wasn't anywhere near the venues they booked or I had insufficient funds.
Although I haven't been fortunate enough to have ever caught the band, RayRo did take me to see Stevie solo (with a Boz Scaggs intro) in 1998 at the Gorge in Washington. That was probably the most beautiful concert I have ever seen. Sounded good too!
I hope your birthdays were/are as goofy and fun as a Dr Suess Birthday Cake!

The next evening, Saturday, Cain's 28-yr old cousin died unexpectedly of Congestive Heart Failure - for no discernible reason. He left a 4-yr old son behind.
Those deaths were basically at the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum: Ailing Elderly <---> Young Man in Perfect Health. It's just crazy and has left me feeling really drained and numb. I get three days of funeral leave from work, unfortunately, since we couldn't get the VA to schedule the burial any sooner, I had to come in this Monday and today. Do you know how hard it is to work when all you can think about is that your gramps is gonna be buried in the next few days? It's not easy. I do get some comfort in the fact that he is better off now - he hasn't felt well for a long time and was as ready as you can be to go. Here is his obituary:
Tony retired after 20 years of service in the United States Army. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts. After completing his military service in 1972, Tony rejoined his family in Caldwell, where he began a 20-year career at Caldwell Memorial Hospital where he was fondly known as "Mac."
He is survived by his loving wife, Susie McKeithan; two children, Norman (wife, Janie Grant) McKeithan and Susan (husband, Richard Jensen) McKeithan-Jensen; two grandchildren, Jennifer Pinkerton and Ryan (wife, Kimberly Raymond) Jensen; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Roman Jensen; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Lillie McKeithan; and five of his siblings.
Viewing will be held Wednesday, July 11 at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell from 4:30 until 8 p.m. Tony's graveside services will commence at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery, Boise, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12. An escorted procession from Dakan Chapel to the Veterans Cemetery will leave at 10 a.m. The family will be welcoming visitors at their home in Caldwell following services.
Memorial donations may be made in Tony's name to the DaVida Nephrology Clinic in Nampa or the VA Hospital in Boise. Tony's family would like to extend their warmest gratitude to the staff at both facilities for their kindness and care. Published in the Idaho Press Tribune on 7/10/2007.

to the fans of the treasure valley rollergirls....
thanx for bein there, we've practiced & trained for a year now. going through soo much, physically, emotionally & any other obstacle we had to encounter on the way.
ever since i joined people asked, do you get paid? nope.
does it hurt? yes. so why do you do it?
up until last night it was because of the sport, which that is a huge part of it, your all derby or nothing.
but last night filled in the last piece of the puzzle. this huge dust cloud covered, bruised, chaotic puzzle on wheels....
& it was all of you, the true fans of the treasure valley rollergirls!!
those fans who waited in lines to get the chance to sit on metal bleachers & watch us tear each other apart, cheering & screaming all the while!!
& i can say with out a doubt, that every single girl on the league looks forward to every pain filled, gruelling practice, just so we can do it all over again for years to come, for you...
again thanx,

Unexpected Artists
There was a time, I speak of Boise circa 1975, when Downtown was desolate, Idaho was too-often mixed up with Iowa — well, perhaps we haven't quite outgrown that one — and Boise was a punch line.
What was always cool about this town, though, was that even before it became the darling of "most livable," "most bikeable," "most business-friendly" lists, it tended to breed artists.
As long as I can remember, Boise has been home to people who quietly, confidently, do their own thing.
I always figured it had to do with the unacceptability of the status quo if you grow up feeling fond of your hometown, but out of place in it, too. If you want to stay, you have to find, or more often create, a private place where you're happy.
My great delight in writing features for the Statesman's Life section, has been discovering that while Boise has grown, the same kinds of creative people still live here, like they always have.
Performers, writers and visual artists are legion and inspiring, but the unexpected artists especially intrigue me.
I think of the women of Juan Martinez's welding class at Boise State, Annie Berglund, Melissa Corp, Kimberly Ecklund, Lerina Harris and Erika Sather-Smith. Commercial welders, they created a metal bra sculpture suitable for Barbarella or a Valkyrie. They donated the piece to a fundraising auction to fight breast cancer.
Rita Sturiale opened her house to Preservation Idaho's Heritage Home Tour this year. The North Ender insists she's never thrown anything away in her whole life. The rock given to her by a high school boyfriend that still decorates her patio is good evidence.
Her home is a quirky museum of armadillo purses, dolls and things you'd find in a cellar. She leaves spider webs intact because she thinks they're beautiful. My favorite new structure in town may be the greenhouse she built entirely of salvaged windows. It hangs on the side of her Queen Anne house, keeping her substantial cacti collection warm all winter.
I love the Treasure Valley Rollergirls, a group of local women who started Boise's first flat track roller derby league. They don't just skate. They marry art, athletics and considerable humor into one campy mix.
Each woman has created an elaborate persona for the track, like "Nurse Naughty," a zaftig beauty whose roller motto is "Your pain is soon going to be 10 out of 10," and "Devil's Dimes." She's a blond, pixie-ish woman, except for her horns.
Two of my favorite places in town also are depositories for the unexpectedly artistic. The Idaho Historical Archives and Library is home to one of the most haunting photo collections I've ever seen — mugshots of the women imprisoned in the Old Pen from 1887 to 1968. History books often detail the bright and industrious in society. These small photographs detail the dark side of Idaho life that didn't make the history books.
Then there's the Historical Society's storage warehouse in a secret location near Downtown Boise. The dusty jars of ossified Chinese medicines, memorial wreaths made of human hair and a horse's Ku Klux Klan hood wrapped in tissue paper are only a few of the reasons the place is known as "Idaho's attic."
Vietnam vet Joe Toluse looks after the collection, attempting to catalogue everything in the place. When he's not on the job, he likes to amass his own collection of chopsticks.
